Google Kembangkan Format Gambar 'Pengganti' JPEG

Siapa yang tidak curiga kalau Google punya keinginan menguasai dunia? Lihat saja bagaimana hampir semua aspek kehidupan internet mau dikuasai 'sang raksasa putih'.

Mulai dari pencarian, browser, sistem operasi hingga ponsel telah dihadirkan oleh Google. Kini, perusahaan asal Mountain View itu memunculkan sebuah format gambar.


Format bernama WebP itu, secara teori, bisa menggantikan format JPEG. Menurut Google, ukuran file WebP menunjukkan penurunan yang cukup signifikan dibandingkan JPEG. Sedangkan dari sisi kualitas tak terlalu berbeda.

Hasil uji Google, yang dikutip detikINET dari Ars, Minggu (3/10/3010), menyebutkan penurunan ukuran gambar rata-rata mencapai 39 persen.

WebP menggunakan metode kompresi yang sama dengan yang digunakan pada codec video VP8. "Kami menerapkan teknik dari intra frame coding di codec VP8 yang digunakan untuk kompresi frame," ujar Richard Rabbat, product manager di Google.

Untuk containernya, Google menggunakan teknologi yang hanya mengambil ukuran 20 byte per gambar. Meski kecil, lanut Rabbat, container itu cukup untuk menyimpan metadata yang dibutuhkan.

Ars menyebutkan, Google mendapatkan codec VP8 setelah membeli perusahaan bernama On2 pada 2009. Implementasi standar VP8 telah di-opensource-kan oleh Google hingga melahirkan format multimedia bernama WebM.

Meski menjanjikan, penerapan teknologi ini secara praktis harus menunggu dukungan dari browser. Chrome, browser buatan Google, akan mendukung WebP pada versi yang akan datang.

Selain itu, Google telah membuat sebuah patch untuk WebKit. Teknologi WebKit digunakan untuk rendering layout dan halaman web pada Safari, Chrome hingga BlackBerry.
